CV Spotlight: New Blood 3

Produced by Vice Vecta and edited by Shiku San, New Blood 3 is a multi-game combo video featuring contributions from twenty people, where almost every single person specialized in a different game. Check out this preview edited by Drawohkan for an idea of what to expect.

The 3rd New Blood Official Teaser

And the full version is finally out, clocking in at nearly twenty minutes! What are you waiting for? Go check it out. I’m sure you’ll agree it was worth the wait.

The 3rd New Blood

The error1 SF4 Gouken combos i’ve been waiting for everyone to see begin at the 14:05 mark. There are far too many highlights to list, but i personally enjoyed Aldevaran‘s KoF2k Kyo double KO combo at 4:25, Remxi‘s KoF98 Leona combo at 4:56, Battousai‘s MSH Blackheart combo at 9:40, CPS2‘s SF3:2I Ibuki combos starting at 12:39, Dark Chaotix‘s T6 Devil Jin combo at 14:47, and Persona‘s Castlevania Judgement combos starting at 16:55. You might also notice that i contributed some old CvS2 combos at 10:25, but they’re nothing special.

Sustaining and Surrendering Momentum

During the course of an otherwise effective offensive sequence, you may attempt to bait a reversal which your opponent refuses to take – landing you in an awkward neutral situation. What should you do after a wrong guess costs you momentum?

Well, i don’t think there’s a universal answer to that question. Certain characters might have situation-specific tricks to artificially extend momentum, but it’s a mistake to assume that you ought to cling to momentum forever. Ideally, you want to strike a calculated balance between offensive and defensive play to give yourself the upper hand under all circumstances. Obviously momentum grants significant advantages, but making desperate wagers to preserve it exposes you to dangerous pitfalls.

Well-played matches should look like you’re consistently in control and your strategy is overall superior. You don’t necessarily have to win every single rock/paper/scissors instance. If that were true then the absolute highest regarded moments in Street Fighter history would be lopsided Makoto or Dudley massacres where one player happens to guess right every time. Clearly that’s not the case because we all consider those to be flukes.

Being able to maintain momentum is less important than being able to build it up from neutral equilibrium. To become a great offensive player, you need to develop an arsenal of reliable ways to break through the opponent’s defensive mid-range zone. Once you gain confidence in your ability to accomplish this task at will, you’ll stop overvaluing momentum to the point of risking entire matches to hang onto it.

Call for Video Editor for Evo2k10 Project

Is anyone interested in working on a possible Evo project? I know a lot of combo video makers, but not too many people who specialize in editing; and they’re all busy with prior commitments at the moment.

To give you an idea of the subject matter, it’s a fast-paced fighting game video but neither a combo nor glitch video. We’re looking at roughly five minutes of footage composed of well over a hundred short clips, so you’ll need to have solid video editing skills to keep it dynamic without going overboard or making it tacky. Also, part of the challenge will be dealing with a diverse range of fighting games, video codecs, resolutions, frame rates, and volume levels.

Keep in mind that the entire video must be finalized by June with at least a month to spare before Evo2k10. And we’ll need a working draft by the end of this month to give us an idea of what we’re missing, so we can fill in the blanks as soon as possible.

If this sounds intriguing/exciting, just leave a quick comment along with links to one or two of your projects to give me an idea of your style. I’ll look through every response and contact you directly. (Please don’t put your card in the hat if you’re not reasonably certain that you’ll be able to see this through to the end, or if you don’t know how to keep a secret.)

edit: In case anyone happens to be reading this and wondering what the project was – now that Evo has passed, i can proudly say it was sh/f Super Fireball Battle (premiered July 11th, 2010). Rithli did a phenomenal job editing the video and absolutely rocked the house!

CvS2 Leftovers ’04

Still no Gouken TACV, but expect to see it next week. In the meantime, here’s a quick mashup of CvS2 combos i recorded back in 2004 – primarily for an Evo trailer which never materialized.

There’s not much to say about the contents. Chun Li and Maki get beat up a lot because they’re special. Rolento gets beat up a whole lot because he’s literally the Rolento of CvS2. Curvy lifebars mean CvS and green curvy lifebars mean CvSPro.

I’ll be happy to explain anything specific if anyone asks, but i’m not going to bother writing a full transcript for ’04 combos in 2010.
