Wish List

Well, my Lakers just rocked the rat bastard Celtics to force an NBA Finals Game 7 for the first time since forever ago, so i’m in a pretty good mood. I also happen to have nothing to talk about today, so let’s try something different. If i could ask for anything (fighting-game-related), this would be my impossible wish list:

1) Footage of SF2WW testers playing the game the week before release, just to see how the design team intended the game to be played versus how Street Fighter is played today.

2) Any original TZW Tape or DVD. To this day, i’ve never seen a genuine copy in person.

3) A complete history of the Street Fighter scene written by Watson, Choi, Valle, and Killian. Yeah i know this is a hopeless request, even without adding Ohira or Osaki to the mix.

4) Playable beta of Capcom Fighting All Stars. I can’t help but wonder how fun it would be to mess around with that bizarre game. They even gave Charlie his own Sonic Hurricane. I feel like there’s a void in my life, and the only prescription is Ryu’s Shin Standing Fierce fatality.

5) CvS3 in 2D!

Okay, your turn now. What’s your top five?

  1. LJGPliskin

    CvS2 for PSN and XBLA.

    CvS3 in 2D as well.

Better arcades with more fighting game cabs where I live.

A NeoGeo cabinet in my room lol.

Can’t quite think of a fifth one at the moment, but four is good too lol.

  2. error1

    1) ssf4 for the pc
    2) a good ps2-rr emulator with all the bells
    3) a wii-rr emulator
    4) lua support for Mednafen-rr
    5) a windows vm with rr
    6) ssf4 for the pc

LJGPliskin: I don’t really care that much about 2D vs 3D. If i had the choice between the same exact game in 2D or 3D, i’d choose 2D in CvS3’s case. But in all honesty, with the way everything is set up these days, i think a 3D game has a better chance of being good. 3D means bigger talent pool and better market reception, which means bigger budget.

error1: You can’t do that bro, that’s against the rules! If you want to wish for PC SSF4 twice, you have to take out one of your other wishes.

  4. the_chap

    1) CvS3. 2D or 3D is fine with me but if it’s in 2D, I’d hope they redraw all the sprites.

    2) What the weekly/monthly bug reports were leading up to the release of SF4. Because I’m sure someone should have noticed that Sagat is waaaaay too powerful compared to someone like Vega or Fuerte.

    3) Better normal moves for Fuerte. His far standing Fierce and crouching Roundhouse are terrible in their startup frames, especially his far standing Fierce. It’s almost unusable.

    4) Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown on a console, preferably on a PS3 with online support.

    5) A new Marvel vs Capcom ga…… Oh wait, they’re already doing that… Nevermind then…

  5. fenris

    1) Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter, I know its never gonna happen but im gonna keep hoping for it anyway
    2) More people to play Melty Blood with(only place i can find people to play against is arcade UFO)
    3) Some more SSF4 or SF4 combo videos from Maj(had too put something on this list thats gonna come true)
    4) Sagat to be de-nerfed, he wasnt that bad in the first place
    5) Go to evo one day

  6. ShaXan

    Go to EVO

    Being able to understand MvC2

MvC3 was gonna be on my list, because I hoped for a less technical, more accessible MvC.

A good community for all fighting games (even those cheesy free online ones)

SSF4 for PC, then I’ll be able to see error1 and other’s short and crazy auto assist combos.

  7. ShadowXSnake

    1) A new Muscle Bomber game. Yeah, that’s right. I want a game with all the grapplers that Street Fighter has ever crapped out, facing off against the old Muscle Bomber characters. And I want to be able to tag team R. Mika and Zangief against Mike Haggar and Hugo.
    2) NamcoXCapcom FIGHTING game. I want a battle of the flattops, with Paul against Guile, which flattop wins? Paul’s flattop is taller, but Guile’s is flatter.
    3) New Capcom v. SNK. Obvious.
    4) A Korean character in a fighting game that DOESN’T use Tae Kwon Do (Juri doesn’t count, because even though what she uses has nothing in common with real Tae Kwon Do, they still call it that and Juri has nothing in common with Korea in any case anyways. Seriously though, all the fighting styles to choose from, and everyone goes to the same stupid one? How about a little Hapkido? A light semi-grappler would be nice.
    5) Bring back vanilla Gen, because he’s so much worse now. Or ideally, give him the best of BOTH games, so he could actually compete a little bit. Give him his EX-Oga back, his short hops (at least one of them), return his auto-correct super, crossup Oga, and reinstate his old normals range, but keep his new normal speed, usable Gekiro kicks, and improved super recovery. I don’t even CARE about mk into hands anymore, just make Gen a worthwhile character. Heck, cut and paste him from Alpha for all I care. You know, I’ve yet to see ANYONE online that mains Gen, and I’ve only played one other Gen player AT ALL (and he didn’t really know what he was doing) I find more Dan replays than I do Gen. It’s embarrassing.

  8. ShaXan

On a side note, SSF4 FOR 3DS OMGWFBBQ!

No bu seriously, It’ll probably be pretty cool, the only thing that Street Fighter players will hate is not being able to hook up a stick. I bet people are planning on modding their 3DS with Sanwas.

I forgot if the 3DS has two screens. Does it? and a Touch screen? or no.

  9. el david

    1. Killer Instinct 3 (2D/2.5D) – Yes, haters are gonna hate.
    2. Rerelease of KI2 – I ignored it in the arcades but devoured it on the N64; great techno soundtrack
    3. CvS3 2D
    4. Penalizing Rage Quitters – They removed the quit % feature in SSFIV, though it wasn’t as good a deterrent as many hoped.
    5. Mike Hagar in a Street Fighter game (that would complete the infamous matchups).

  10. N00b_Saib0t

    1 – CvS3 in 2.5D

2- consistent SF canon. “akuma sgs’d bison and killed him dead. wait i changed my mind. also gouken was just taking a year long nap.”

3- less laggy SSF4 matches online. i know no lag isnt possible, but there has to be something better than what we have now.

4- guest characters in SF games. it would be cool to see ryu run into strider or something outside of MvC. i dont even care if they are playable, the cameo apperances would be cool.

5- for people to understand that my concern for “back+assist” to tag in MvC3 will lead to inadvertant tags while blocking and walking back is not the same as “wha! L M H AC A1 A2 is scrub friendly!”, i actually like the new scheme.

  11. Twilito

1 – Arika to give the licesncing to Capcom and SFEX3 to come back, either a HD remix or even just the characters being re-released in future SF titles somehow, my favourite childhood game, but the music was the best out of all.

2 – In some crazy distant parrallel universe, I think it would be hilarious if Tony Hawks vs Street fighter was released. I know its impossible and and is very likely to ever happen, but never say never.

3 – A video game tournament of any kind (Preferrably fighting) Broadcast on Tv world wide. That would be an awesome sight to see.

4 – SSF4’s online to be fixed. Sure they did make some improvments, but after the hype died down for SSF4 coming out, some of the same things were still there, and how they said they were going to do something about people rage quitting, but now they dont even show disconnect ratio like they did in SF4, and no one can be bothered enough to check it.

5 – To go to an SSF4 tournament and win it.

  12. yungxcve

Go to EVO and participate….how bout next year. Yeah, i’ll be ready then.

Bring back Championship mode from vanilla for Super.

Dragon Ball vs. Capcom. What will win, Shinkuu Hadouken or Kamehameha? The world will finally know. lol

Of course, CVS3. if Not CVS3 then 3rd strike for PSN with online play

DLC for SSFIV to include more than 3 characters. How bout some more 3rd strike characters and the rest of Alpha’s cast? I’m getting greedy.

  13. zafo999

I’d like to see a SF spinoff series that functions more as a sequel to 3S. The way that SF4 seemed to function as a sequel to SF2.

I feel like an extension of the system of 3S could be a lot of fun, albeit probably less popular than SF4. But if they could do the same quality beautiful 2D animations with HD sprites, bring back the parry system maybe with some changes or improvements, and maybe a new mix of 3S characters and brand new cast members (new characters don’t seem to bother me as much as they seemed to bother people who didn’t like the SF3 series), I think it could be a really good time.

I still really enjoy 3S. I know a lot of people don’t. But I like how much faster and offensive it feels while still being a fairly simple, straightforward SF game. I like the 2D artwork and the fresh character archetypes. I’d like to see a new game like that. And seeing as the SF4 series probably (and understandably) won’t ever go in that direction, I say just make a lower-budget 2D spinoff game as a continuation of the SF3 series.

Also, I’d like to place 1st at Evo every year until I die. I’m not sure which of my wishes is more unlikely.

  14. harejordan

    1. CvS3 instead of MvC3
    2. Stock TE sticks could be used for PS3 and 360.
    3. With the new Starcraft 2 editor, a fighting game.
    4. A combo video showing all types of moves, hits, supers, ultras against Dhalsim’s limbs. (I imagine it’d be hilarious)

And I don’t have a time machine but,
    5. To see Tomo in action at his prime.

  15. jamheald

    1.Tool assisted controllers for hands
    2. More love for Dee Jay on tournament level
    3. Turns out MvC3 is set for release tomorrow
    4. More DLC
    5. More ssfiv from Maj!

  16. ThundaSnake

    5. Another game like Dungeon Fighter Online, except on consoles. I love beat-em-ups, and would play DFO so much more if I could play it on my 360.
    4. To place very respectively well in an Evo-caliber tournament.
    3. A tournament with the staff of Capcom versus the world’s best players (SSF4, or any popular Capcom fighting game). In an interview a while back, Seth Killian said that some of the Capcom staff are so good, that very few people would be able to beat them; I’m interested in just how good they are. It’s a shame we’ll never get to see that, since they’re not allowed to play in tournaments.
    2. Another Namco/Capcom crossover game (whether it’s a sequel to Namco X Capcom, or the rumored Tekken vs. Street Fighter, either one would be amazing).
    1. A competitive, remade version of Rival Schools 2: Project Justice (or just a full-out sequel). As silly as this game is, it is honestly one of my favorite fighters of all time, and has some of the coolest characters (Batsu, Hinata, Kyosuke, Akira, Zaki…the list goes on).

  17. Kareeem

    1. a proper ST port on a next gen console.
    2. VF5:FS on consoles
    3. Capcom going the SNK route and porting more of their classics to XBLA/PSN as is (no remixes or whatever) like 3s, cvs2, darkstalkers series, alpha.
    4. the community to support quality games. SF4 getting the spotlight is fine as it’s new but I’m sure there are people who would rather play other games but don’t just because “no one plays them.”
    5. money playing less of a role.

  18. Bob Sagat

What do you mean by “money playing less of a role” Kareeem?
In game development? Marketability vs. quality of the end product? Money matches? Or do you just want free games?

  19. yungxcve

i think he means Boxer. HE means that money shouldn’t be such a motivating force in Boxer’s life.

  20. Kareeem

Money corrupts. I don’t see anything good coming out of these huge money pots like the one for SSF4 at EVO.

  21. Bob Sagat

Just as I thought. Get your communist ideals outta here, ya hippie!

I wish ST’s HDR makeover actually looked good. That’s all I got for now.

  22. zafo999

I think of all the issues you could have with money, getting the great players paid is probably the least problematic. If anything, I’d like to see more cash going to the winners of tournaments.

  23. Maj Post author

Yeah i don’t know if a blanket statement like “money corrupts” applies here. This is the way it’s always been. Entry fees comprise the tournament pot, so obviously it increases as more people enter. It’s kind of difficult to justify restricting it because more entrants also means more competition for the winner to have to wade through.

There probably is a line where you can say, “This is enough money for the winner” and start putting some of that surplus entry money into improving the event itself, but that’s a dark grey area. Trust me, it sounds much better on paper than the way it goes down in real life.

People tend to get really angry when they find out that the tournament organizer “pocketed” some of that money. Especially considering how many people always volunteer to help run major tournaments.

For better or worse, it’s generally better to avoid touching the entry pot.

  24. Kareeem

I’m not talking about shady behavior, or placing limits on what goes from entry fee to tournament pot. That’s not what I had in mind when I came out with the terribly cliched ” money corrupts.”

What I meant was I don’ t like such a big emphasis being played on the money by both organizers and players in what started out as a community where people come together to play the games that they love because they love them. The more things become about money the less they are about the original intent of whatever the subject matter is.

Bob Sagat said something about ideals, I just meant that in my ideal world money wouldn’t place so high on the priority list when talking about competing in video games. That’s all. I wasn’t aware that all 5 wishes had to be a 100% realistic :P.

  25. Maj Post author

That’s fair. The problem with money is it’s usually not the source of the problem, but a symptom or a warning sign. It’s hard to say where money does or doesn’t belong because ultimately the deciding factor is people’s intentions. I agree with you in wanting everyone to be involved primarily for love of the game. Hopefully we can still make that happen despite the extra money+ambition that SF4 has generated.
