CV Spotlight: SSF4 Combo Video Kickoff, Wave 2

Continuing from last week, here’s the second batch of standout Super Street Fighter 4 videos.

RushDownTV Presents: Spotlight Makoto | Spotlight DeeJay | Spotlight Ibuki

Want to pick up an SSF4 newcomer in under ten minutes? Pimp Willy provides a quick rundown of each character’s practical combos along with a wide variety of useful basic tricks. These videos are all sharply edited with a clear focus on content, while staying fast-paced enough to hold the viewer’s attention. I’m not sure what his future plans are for the series but i certainly hope he continues to make more.

SSFIV: Combos+Unblockables 1 | C+U2 | C+U3 | CMV4

Just when it looked like desk was semi-retired from combo video making, he goes on a tear with a whole slew of top shelf videos in honor of SSF4. These are all so consistently good that it’s nearly impossible to single out individual moments. If i had to choose, personally i’d have to go with and Dudley 2:45 in episode one, Dee Jay 1:50 in episode two, Rose 0:55 in episode three, and Seth 1:46 and Fei Long 2:25 in episode four.

SSF4 Various Character Combo Exhibition Video

Following his SF4 combovids by the same name, Dj-B13 takes a look at his favorite characters in SSF4 and shares his inventive stylings. He starts off with a couple of flashy Dan combos, follows up with some bully Sagat combos, then gets down to business with Chun Li. Her midscreen juggle combo at 1:42 is quite nice and so’s the first Ibuki combo at 2:16. His last midscreen Juri combo at 2:50 was pretty cool too.

Desk’s CVs are by far my second best out of anyone else’s but your’s. It is amazing that they’re not tool assisted though. lol

Yeah, especially the unblockables. its like a extremely hard combo + getting one frame timing for the ultra.

i dont really know where to ask this kind of thing, but maj, do you think you could do an article about how SF4’s input leniency and damage scaling arent ruining the competitive SF4 scene? i went on a nostalgia trip today and watched a bunch of old ST, 3S, and CvS2 matches and i noticed that the core game play isnt too different from what we see in SF4 matches. input leniency doesnt encourage “random” shoryukens and “random” supers. watch daigo vs ino evo 2k3 CvS2 finals, you’ll see some “random” supers from two of the best there, but oh snap they worked a couple times. watch daigo vs afrolegends from evo 2k6 HSF2, daigo hits a pretty random shoryuken against afrolegends when he’s about to get the perfect. i think people should also notice that players doing short combos isnt a new thing. aside from CCs, the matches i’ve seen all featured prominent amounts of 3S ken and chun c.mk->super, CvS2 (insert characters best poke)->super, and of course the classic short short super in ST.

i’ve been trying to point this out on eventhubs and gamefaqs when people talk about damage scaling ruining the game, but i give up. it needs to come from someone more respected than me for people to realize that all SF4 did was become accessible to new players (leniency) and change combo videos rather than tournaments (damage scaling).

then again, maybe you disagree with me, which would also lead to a fun read. either way, if you could find time, this would be cool IMO.

I think it’s so obvious that competitive street fighter is better then it’s ever been that it doesn’t even need to be stated. How can anyone claim that making the game easier to get into is a bad thing. It took me a few years before I could do sf2 special moves consistently, strangely I got good on it with a keyboard playing the st port. In conclusion easy input is part of the reason sf4 is so popular, and please make ssf4 for the pc.

Half the people moaning have never played another game and couldn’t survive without/really don’t understand (I see people getting srk instead of ultra and blaming shortcuts) input leniency, when people can’t see that they won’t know who Maj is, other than some guy who was featured on eventhubs and they commented “DAAMAAGEE SCAALIING!!1” on. But yes I would love an article by Maj on the development of street fighter.

N00b_Saib0t: I don’t know man, i can’t really see the benefit to engaging in that debate. We’re living in the “Internet Age” which means everyone eventually grows to hate on everything popular. It’s annoying but it can be a positive thing as an instrument of progress.

At any rate, i agree with you that input leniency has helped Street Fighter regain mainstream success. Coming off a catastrophic failure like Capcom Fighting Jam, that’s exactly what we needed to stay relevant.

Beyond that, there’s not much you can say that wouldn’t be oversimplifying matters. ST, CvS2, and 3S were great games for diverse, complex reasons. (Minor nitpick: ST didn’t have “short short super” in the way you implied.)

But yeah, i’m reallllly not interested in getting sucked into an opinion war with the mindless anonymous trolls of eventhubs.

fair enough. and i worded it as “the classic short short super” referring to the kara cancel into super, or whatever it is. like c.lkX2, qcfX2+lp+lk. i was just using it as an example of a short combo that has been used for well like a decade.

That combo is the ST equivalent of Balrog’s jab to ultra. It exists on paper but for all practical purposes it’s a myth. Nobody uses short short super in ST except gimmicky Guiles and N.Ken (the definition of a gimmick character).

One of the things that makes ST good is the prohibitive difficulty of comboing into super. Saying that short short super existed way back in ST and “has been used for a decade” is totally misleading.

And to be completely honest, i can defend SF4 against 3S, MvC2, SFA2/3, even CvS2, but not ST. ST is just plain better.

wow, i thought short shot super was more prominent in ST than that, i guess not. i know i saw a match vid about 10 years ago where a n.ken player used it, and people discussing it on SRK, i didnt realize it was a gimmicky n.ken thing though. maybe i should follow it a bit more closely.
