CV Spotlight: Calcius Repton’s BGM Promo

I’m embarrassingly late to the party with this, but there seemed to be something major or urgent going on every week since its release. At any rate, better late than never, right?

Calcius Repton’s ‘BGM’ Promo | Bonus Round

To celebrate his band’s third album, desk collaborated with error1 on this special promo video. It contains single rounds of choroegraphed footage from SSF2T, SFA2, SF3:3S, MvSF, and SFA Dramatic Battle – along with a deleted Gem Fighter round.

The action flows continuously from one clip to the next, with the end of each round duplicated in successive titles. Even the victory symbols and lifebar levels are carefully kept intact. However, the most impressive facet of this whole project is the meticulous balance they struck between showing off difficult combos and maintaining a logical progression of counters to make it look like Ryu and Chun Li are actually fighting. That’s not at all easy to pull off.

thanks for getting around to it. I really like what desk did with the editing, there are lots of hidden things I didn’t notice until he told me, like how at :54 the Chun Li death cry is from alpha2. I also did some stuff to try and tie it together and make it seem like it’s the same people playing and learning the whole time, stuff like how the ryu player gets j.mp to combo in st so he tries it in a2 and it doesn’t work.
I really liked the way it turned out and have probably watched it over 100 times

    Theory Fighter: The Combo Video!

Speaking of audio, i like the airplane sound in the beginning. There are nice touches everywhere though.

Chun gets dizzy at 0:26, yet she’s the one who lands the wakeup combo. Nice use of air Hurricane Kick in that round too. I like how the CC fireball hits really late at 0:43. That whole parry sequence from 1:15 to 1:20 is awesome too. And i like the s.HK trade combo at 1:47.

Having watched it 100 times, is there anything you would change?

actually at 0:26 Ryu is the one who gets dizzy it just looks confusing.

what would I change? I would have made some of the transitions (super meter and time and stuff) tighter. There are a few places where it’s off by a little bit and I have a better way of doing it now. I feel end part of the alpha2 is a little slow and I don’t like chuns second CC ( I had to hold back so I wouldn’t kill ryu ). I think I used too many punished srks. I wanted to do a part where chun tried to chip with lightning legs on wakeup like at the end of the first round and was punished for it. At the start of the dramatic battle sequence there is a shudder in ryu’s standing animation because Desk used some editing trickery to extend how long the text boxes where and have the “round 1 fight” line up with the music. Anything I didn’t list here tho it’s safe to say I’m super pleased with it.

Oh right, it had to be Ryu because otherwise Chun’s j.LK wouldn’t have knocked him down. Guess i automatically assumed Ryu caused the dizzy ’cause Ryu is strong.

And yeah, it did feel like Ryu’s uppercuts were getting baited all over the place, but he landed a couple of good ones too.
