CV Spotlight: KYSG’s 3S Yang Exhibition

After nearly four years of silence following his ninth amazing SF3:3S combo video, 538 (of the group KYSG) is back with this long-awaited Yang episode.

SF3 3rd Strike Yang Combo Exhibition (Rough Sketch)

The description states that it’s not to be perceived as the tenth volume of his 3S video series. Apparently all this footage was recorded from 2004 to 2006 in preparation for Yang’s chapter, but he didn’t get a chance to finish it. I guess KYSG’s 10th anniversary finally convinced 538 to release whatever he had recorded.

I don’t care if it’s incomplete; it’s still good enough to be highlighted as far as i’m concerned. Honestly i’m just happy that i finally get to spotlight a new KYSG release. 538 is easily one of my favorite combo makers of all time. I don’t know what to expect from this, but i subscribed to his u2b channel the minute i was sure it was the real deal.

Hey let’s actually discuss this video, yeah? I’m familiar with 3S but never got as into it as i did with the CvS or SF2 series.

At 0:23, why does command grab connect after the third rekka knocks down? Does that work with any knockdown? If so, why don’t we ever see it after s.MK or upkick?

Obviously Yang can follow up after SA2 if the last hit whiffs. Why doesn’t he ever do it twice in a row?

At 1:51, does that crazy crossthrough rekka only work against crouching Yun?

At 2:00, why is 538 so badass??

At 2:31, that seems like a really elaborate setup against Necro. Why is it necessary?

I mean twice in a row with followups each time (as a proper continuous combo, not two combos joined by dizzy).

I don’t think I’ve seen anyone get command thrown mid combo in 3S before this, unless I’ve completely forgotten about it (which is possible haha). That was probably the main thing that stood out to me. Also SA2, whiff dive kick SA2 vs Alex was very cool.

Would probably need to see transcripts or try recreating combos to understand anything else. I think I get most of it, but it just looks flashy. Not too certain of timing windows and character specific stuff, or anything else that stands out as weird.

    @Maj

Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t understand what you meant. Well, I don’t know anything about any combo system so… haha

    Isn’t he doing SA2 twice in a row vs Q at 3:01?

As for that Necro combo, it looks like he’s using target combo Forward for the stylishness of using the target combo? The following combo uses target combo RH, that’s my guess. I can’t say why he doesn’t just use normal close Forward twice otherwise.

Isn’t he doing SA2 twice in a row and then following up at :32.
seriously tho, it looks like that necro setup is so he can start the combo with an antiair chained mk, despite it looking like the normal mk it’s not a launcher or anything

For some reason, “true” command grabs connect on some opponents who are hitting the ground, as seen in his last combo video “Vol. 9 – Necro” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buJfzlmEXys#t=3m05s It’s possible with Hugo and Urien, and Gill as well – though Gill can also just be hit with specials/normals, etc – as though he were on the ground, leading to some infinites with Ibuki and probably other characters. So after Yang does the rekkas, he hits the Aegis and recovers to do a Zenpou Tenshin right as Urien hits the round.

The crossover rekka slash works on crouching Yun and Yang, and it can be irritating when you’re trying to maintain corner pressure during a match.

Juggling two SA2s isn’t too hard, doesn’t require dizzy or anything, you can do it yourself if you’re feeling bored: Corner someone (Chun, why not), do cl.MK xx SA2 (requires a superjump cancel, so, down, forward, down, up+forward +kick) then upon landing, input the super again. Not nearly as awesome as that Alex one, or the Remy one where he does some slashes before supering.

Regarding the vs. Necro combo, error1 is right, the first MK isn’t really just an MK, it’s part of his LK->MK->HK target combo, Necro parries the LK, then cancels into EX Flying Viper, which makes him airborne on one of the first frames, allowing the chained version of the MK to juggle (it can only come out if the LK connected, which only does so on the ground) – it doesn’t reset Necro because he’s dizzied, then Yang uses the standard cl.MK for another hit before super-jump-super-canceling to SA2. It’s a pretty roundabout way to have two cl.MKs in a row, but it’s obviously pretty eye catching, no?

I think 538 is so badass because uh…well damn, I don’t even know. Imagine if this were the *finished* version. I really hope he reconsiders…

Cool, i didn’t notice it was s.LK that Necro parried. That makes sense now.

I remember that command grab setup in volume 9, but that doesn’t answer why Yang can’t do it after other knockdowns/launchers like s.MK or upkick. Is fall height/speed a factor?

And speaking of 0:23, why the hell does Urien get knocked toward Yang?

Lastly, i think you guys are still misunderstanding my question about SA2. I know it’s possible to do two of them in a row. My friend kept doing that to me in matches five years ago. My question is, why doesn’t 538 ever do two of them in a row and follow up after the second one?

  9. N00b_Saib0t

maybe i’m stating the obvious here, but in regards to him following up after a second juggle SA2, maybe yang just cant. if you watch the combo vs chun @3:23 the combo message shows up right away when the second SA2 finishes, not when chun hits the ground. that tells me no follow up is possible.

  10. Maj Post author

That’s because the last hit of SA2 connects there. The key to following up after SA2 is forcing that last hit to whiff, which 538 is able to accomplish with a dozen different setups. The question is why can’t he do it twice in a row?

Why Urien goes backwards is beyond me, I’m not sure if it’s some hitbox thing like crouching yun/yang getting crossed up or if it has to do with Yang going backwards from the Aegis. I never thought it wasn’t possible to land a command grab after other knockdowns, have you found that it isn’t?

I think he can’t get the second SA2 to miss the last kick, and if the last kick hits, all juggle potential is exhausted, as evidenced by the combo counter showing up immediately (unless the opponent is dizzy). If one could find a way to have both SA2s whiff the last kick (or hit backwards, really), then it might be possible, but I think it would need a double corner setup or something bizarre that isn’t easy to come by.
