Heading Out to SoCal Regionals

November 6th, 2010 Leave a comment Go to comments

Mr. Street Fighter, Alex Valle himself, is hosting a major multi-game tournament by the name of SoCal Regionals this weekend near Los Angeles International Airport. He asked me to go and how can you say “No” to CaliPower? It can’t be done!

I’m heading out there today and tomorrow, mainly just to hang out, so there probably won’t be a strategy article this weekend. They’re also going to film a live Dogface Show broadcast featuring watts, ChoiBoy, and CaliPower. I can’t wait to see that.

Random Storytime Trivia: I happen to be one of the original founders of NorCal Regionals back in 2003. Although i have nothing to do with its long-term success because i never went back after the first year. You see, NCR was initially a VidOp sponsored tournament. I drove up there to meet up with tragic and helped with all the planning and setup. VidOp died out not too long after that, but i guess the NorCal crowd decided to continue running it.

I don’t talk about it much because it would be silly for me to try to take any credit whatsoever, but it was a pretty awesome experience and a fun tournament. I’m happy to see that it’s still going strong and better than ever.

    That was fun. Probably some of the best top 8 matches of the year. I know a lot of that comes down to matchups and luck of the draw, but the atmosphere was great and the matches reflected that as well. All of the Daigo vs Valle matches were intense and heartbreaking at the same time. Tokido’s theatrics were entertaining and there were a lot of clutch moments throughout top 8. And of course the Dogface Show was amazing. Great event all around.

    As a side note, somehow RedRapper conned me into talking into a camera about SHGL and whatnot. Normally i try to avoid cameras but it’s hard to say “No” to good people. So that might show up in a documentary at some point.

    I was rooting for Valle, so seeing him and Daigo in Super SFIV was like the NFC/AFC Championship games being better than the actual Super Bowl. It was hilarious watching Daigo discover HDR Guile’s overhead then use it better than most HDR players. It was nice not to see a Rufus vs Shoto Final, at least.

    The best part was that I now have the Super SFIV examples of U.S. players playing their hard match ups for that article I’m working on. It was really hard trying to make it relevant to current players when I backed my examples with older games and nothing else current. Good shit to Filipino Champ for fighting Rufus and Cammy.

    Alex Valle did really good against Daigo. Very entertaining match. :}

    Yes, I enjoyed that a lot more than I thought I would, seeing as it was ryu/ryu in ssfiv.
