Suggested Reading, Vol. 1

The fighting game community produces some outstanding strategy articles on a fairly regular basis. If you haven’t already read these and you want to get better at Street Fighter or tournament play in general, you owe it to yourself to take a look.

Tournament Mentality: Confidence at SeattleVersus

The biggest misconception to competitive play in fighting games is that the most skillful players win the most tournaments. At top level play, it’s important to understand that everyone is good and anyone can win. Though skill is concrete, the fine line that separates the good players from the great players is their mentality.

Unfortunately though, the scene tends to be cruel to newcomers at times. When first starting out; there can seem like such an enormous gap between yourself and the best players around. Which can be even more menacing if you happen to also pick the worst character in the game.

Fighting a Losing Fight at Shoryuken

The pros call it ‘Clutch’. The ability to stand tall and ignore the overwhelming pressure of being unwinnably behind. Often, when you are ahead or even in health, its okay to make calculated trades with your opponent. But when you put yourself in a dire situation, where no trade in damage would be acceptable, you stand to learn a lot about yourself as a player, your character, and even the game as a whole.

And if you find these articles insightful and informative, it wouldn’t be such a bad idea to take an extra minute and leave a nice comment for them.

Yeah they even busted out the Mike Tyson quotes and the Chinese proverbs. It’s a very well-written piece i think, especially including that Yipes story from Evo as an example.
