Etc Spotlight: 83 Til – Substance

My friend Metronome asked for help editing a non-fighting-game project a couple of weeks ago and i think it turned out pretty cool, especially considering i had no idea what i was doing. They provided the camera footage, i took care of the groundwork draft, and he added motion graphics – animated text, color overlays, etc.

What does this have to do with Sonic Hurricane? Well, if the name sounds familiar, it’s because these guys hooked me up with a trailer soundtrack and an intro track for my Evo2k7 Guile combovid. It’s the least i could do to return the favor.

By the way, they’ve been involved in making some random comedy videos on the side. Check these out too: The Handshake and Loneliness.

Oh i forgot to mention, Sonic Hurricane is now exclusively a hip hop website. That’s right, i’m officially entering the rap game. In fact i’m in the process of registering hiphophurricane.com as i write this. No more Street Fighter combos. From now on, this website is all about prime time rhyme combos.

Even that non-existent page was fighting game talk “Oops! This link appears to be broken.” you just can’t get away from it.

Btw, some advice for amateur editors like me. This is something i realized while working on this video:

As a non-professional, probably the biggest favor you can do for yourself is clearly conveying what it is you’re trying to convey.

What i mean by that is, if you’re trying to communicate the following statement: “I’ve never filmed anything before, i borrowed someone’s camera to make this video, and it didn’t have a tripod.” Then: Don’t try too hard to mask it in the editing phase, especially if it ends up burning you out and the second half of your video looks startlingly unpolished.

For example, if you have 5 seconds of clapping footage that you need to extend over 10 seconds of music, and you’re having trouble synching up the beats – fuck it, don’t. Just run it in slow motion and make it obvious that you’re running in slow motion. As soon as that registers in people’s brains, they’ll go “Oh i guess i’m looking at a stylistic effect now.”

Conversely, if you were to try to keep it in sync and missed the mark, it would look really bad. Not to mention, you’d probably end up distorting the timeline and making it appear irritatingly unnatural.

So yeah, if you’re not pro, keep it simple and consistent. Let people see what you’re aiming for and they’ll compensate for the shortfall.
