CV Spotlight: rock2no’s KoF95 CMV

Few combo makers “own” a game the way rock2no owns King of Fighters ’95. It doesn’t even matter if you play the game – his videos are always fun to watch, with countless surprises.

KoF95 Combo Music Video | KoF95/97/98 Throw Negation Bug

The video is split into three parts, with the first part featuring older combos, the second part containing bugs and other special occurrences, and the third part presenting new and exciting combos. The command grab glitches are demonstrated in greater detail in the accompanying video. The editing is plain throughout, so the content is presented without distractions.

There are too many highlights to list all of them, but my personal favorites were the Ralf and Clark tag-team at 2:56, Ryo’s dash-cancel air fireball combo at 5:00, the Athena whiff super cancels at 5:19, the Omega Rugal reverse reflect setup at 5:50, Andy’s triple ghettokick combo at 6:06, and the Clark side-switching jab death at 6:46.

Guest Article: Street Fighter II Hitboxes

Combining alchemy and modern technology, Dammit has somehow miraculously succeeded in unlocking the hidden hitboxes of several classic fighting games. He was kind enough to provide his custom display script with brief instructions on how to use it, in addition to a whole slew of fascinating example screenshots alongside detailed background explanations.

Here is a sample of Street Fighter II hitboxes, made with the MAME-rr emulator and Lua script that I developed based on work by mz and felineki.

A brief guide to seeing the hitboxes in action:

  1. Download and set up either MAME-rr or FBA-rr. We recommend MAME because the boxes can cause slowdown in FBA, but it works fine in either.
  2. Get the SF2 hitbox script and save it as a text file with the emulator.
  3. Launch the emulator and start any one of the SF2 games: World Warrior, Champion Edition, Hyper Fighting, Super, Super Turbo or Hyper Street Fighter II. Both “parent” and “clone” sets work.
  4. Open a Lua window. In MAME-rr this is done with Ctrl-L by default. In FBA, click Game, Lua Scripting, and New Lua Script Window. Click the Browse button in the window, select the Lua file, and click Run.

Now as you play the game, hitboxes are superimposed on the sprites. Blue is the area that can be hit by the opponent, and red is the area that can hit the opponent. The green boxes are the areas that can never overlap and will cause characters to push each other.

CV Spotlight: Gen’s Ninja Masters Monster Pack

I’m still not quite sure what to make of this project, but it’s easily one of the most ambitious combo-related undertakings in recent memory. Trust me, it doesn’t matter if you’ve never heard of ADK’s Ninja Masters – nobody has. It’s still worth your time to check these out.

Ninja Masters CMV Vol 1 | Vol 2 | Vol 3 | Infinites CMV
Ninja Masters Ranmaru’s TAS | Nobunaga’s Special
Project Extra: Ragnagard CMV

I have no idea what could have possibly possessed Gen (aka Genas5) to pick out such an obscure game and devote so much time to exploring it inside out. However, what he ended up with has to be the definitive Ninja Masters combo benchmark.

That means if you’ve ever played the game, you’ll want to watch these videos. And if you decide to make a combovid for the game, you’ll have to watch these videos. I’d say that achievement deserves a mention – wouldn’t you?

By the way, the full version of the NM Kamui combo from style exhibition v.one can be found in CMV Vol 3 at 3:39. Gen also submitted the NM Raiga combo at 4:58, but that one didn’t fit the style theme quite as well. Both combos are completely awesome though.

CV Spotlight: wolverine-master’s Danger Room 2

Well, everyone has to give it up eventually, i suppose. After making a series of well-received Marvel combovids, wolverine-master has decided that it’s time to retire from video-making. This is his last combo video, as it says in the u2b description.

The Danger Room 2 | Preview 2.0 / Deleted Scenes

With a runtime over ten minutes, there’s plenty of good material to be found within. Personally i’m partial to the MvC2 Cyclops/Cable combo at 2:53, the XSF Storm/Magneto 200% damage combo at 3:53, and the MvC2 Spider-Man double Maximum Spider combo at 6:49. I also liked the Gambit portion of the MvC2 Gambit/Thanos/Felicia combo at 7:52.

The editing was done by him as well. It’s okay for the most part, although i can’t say i’m a fan of the intro. The music is nice too, although i have to admit i still don’t understand the recurring connection between Marvel combos and Nightwish songs. Anyone?

CV Spotlight: KYSG’s 3S Yang Exhibition

After nearly four years of silence following his ninth amazing SF3:3S combo video, 538 (of the group KYSG) is back with this long-awaited Yang episode.

SF3 3rd Strike Yang Combo Exhibition (Rough Sketch)

The description states that it’s not to be perceived as the tenth volume of his 3S video series. Apparently all this footage was recorded from 2004 to 2006 in preparation for Yang’s chapter, but he didn’t get a chance to finish it. I guess KYSG’s 10th anniversary finally convinced 538 to release whatever he had recorded.

I don’t care if it’s incomplete; it’s still good enough to be highlighted as far as i’m concerned. Honestly i’m just happy that i finally get to spotlight a new KYSG release. 538 is easily one of my favorite combo makers of all time. I don’t know what to expect from this, but i subscribed to his u2b channel the minute i was sure it was the real deal.
