SF4 Screenshot Special: Epic Dodgeball

Here’s the last batch of Street Fighter IV screenshots. If you click on each image, then click on the “All Sizes” icon, the 1280 x 720 option will give you the native resolution lossless PNG file.

Whoever comes up with the best title for the Chun Li vs Cammy picture up top gets to choose the character paired with Akuma for the next SF4 Biweekly TACV! As always, the rules are one entry per person and i’ll choose my favorite on Monday.

sf4-superfreeze-01

SF4 Chun Li cancels HP Kikoken into HK Senretsukyaku and Cammy times her HK Spin Drive Smasher so that both their superfreezes occur simultaneously.

sf4-superfreeze-02

SF4 Rose cancels HP Soul Spark into HP Aura Soul Spark while Dhalsim cancels HP Yoga Fire into HP Yoga Inferno. Both superfreezes coincide with the impact of their projectiles.

sf4-bison-feilong-01

SF4 M.Bison’s lvl2 Focus Attack creates a blue flame to match Fei Long’s second EX Rekkaken. The yellow filter placed over EX moves flickers off roughly once every four or five frames.

sf4-guile-vega-01

SF4 Guile’s Flash Explosion barely misses Vega’s HK Flying Barcelona Attack (to LP followup).

    The same graphics settings were used as for the initial batch.

    FPS Display: OFF
    Antialiasing: NONE
    Full Screen: OFF
    Display Resolution: 1280×720
    Display Refresh Rate: 60
    Display V-Sync: ON
    Frame Rate: Variable
    Aspect Correction: AUTO
    Brightness: 50
    Parallel Rendering: ON
    Texture Filter: 16x
    Model Quality: High
    Background Quality: High
    Soft Shadow: Highest
    Self Shadow: High
    Motion Blur: High
    Particles: High

    Basically everything is either default presets or as high as it would go.

    ooh, didn’t know you could have both superfreezes simultaneously. or does the blue stuff from one linger when the other starts? when a super and ultra are executed on the same frame, which freeze is done first? with two ultras, does it always do the same player first, or is it random?

    I don’t know why I care, but this stuff is interesting to me for some reason.

    For the simultaneous effect, you need both inputs to activate on the exact same frame. Super intros are performed simultaneously — remember the Ryu Exhibition? Ryu and Gouken do their supers at the same time.

    As for super vs ultra: the ultra animation is done first, the super animation follows — before the camera returns to its normal position. It’s a quite cool effect, that I’m pretty sure Maj has already used in the first SF4 screenshot batches.

    Here are a few screenshots of my own from when I discovered that (I wish I knew you could disable the HUD):
    * Zan’ei vs Illusion Spark
    * Zan’ei vs Zetsuei

    zem: It’s a little more complicated than you’d think. I’m sure you’ve noticed how certain things continue moving during superfreeze. Most of the time, superfreeze lasts 1 frame and the game slows down everything that’s happening during that frame so it’s playing in slow motion. If you do two of the same super at the same exact time, the superfreezes will coincide and they’ll animate exactly the same. However certain supers take longer to get from screen freeze to gathering sparks. For example Rose takes a really long time whereas Dan is almost instant, so i couldn’t get Rose vs Dan to work like i’d originally intended. Dhalsim is a lot closer to Rose’s speed so that one actually worked. And it’s impossible to make two simultaneous ultrafreezes. The game simply picks one to play first, then both characters go back to animating simultaneously after both ultrafreezes finish.

    Numsigmernen: Nice screenshots dude! I didn’t even know you could cause superfreeze during ultrafreeze, but i guess it makes sense since apparently ultrafreeze isn’t truly frozen either. But actually that Gouken vs Ryu situation can’t be performed by completing the commands simultaneously. In fact, the only reason it works is because of command buffering during dashes. I’ll explain it in more detail under the Ryu transcript later. Just didn’t think anybody cared since nobody asked.

    Actually Maj, it’s possible to get two Ultras to go off at the same time, maybe online, but I’ve done it. I have a friend on PSN who I often spar with, and one time, I was playing Akuma while he played Fei Long, and he an anti-fireball EX Chicken Wing, and after hitting me with the last hit, he landed did his Ultra (no combo). During the ultra-freeze though, I buffered a Ultra Raging Demon, but accidently hit the HP to early, and Akuma Performed the startup and the teleport for his Ultra Demon without moving, while Fei Long was still in his ultra-freeze, and when the freeze ended, I didn’t grab him with the Ultra, but he instead hit me with the first hit of his Ultra, which Akuma would normally grab him out of with a Raging Demon. Not sure whether the freeze startup for Akuma’s ultra is considered ultra-freeze, but I did perform the teleport part of the ultra inside of Fei’s ultra-freeze. Not sure if that proves anything, but I’m just saying because I think it is possible to get two ultra-freezes at the same time, but the ultra camera angle will be on only one of the characters.

    ShaXan: Hm, sounds interesting. But i’d have to see it to believe it. And even then it might be something special to do with Akuma’s ultra. I just can’t imagine how the game would even handle simultaneous startup animations for most ultras.

    @Maj
    Oh, I assumed super vs super worked the same way. My bad.
    I didn’t know super and ultra could be activated at the same time either, but it once happened to me (online!). I also went through the ultra vs ultra situation once too, but it just happened as you described: one character performs his ultra animation, then the other does his own (presumably with zero game frames inbetween). I know it was simultaneous because I was waking up, and during the opponent’s ultra freeze I got a “reversal” bonus. (Yeah, I did a wake-up ultra. I know I suck.)
    I wouldn’t doubt Akuma’s ultra freeze doesn’t try to reset the camera, resulting in something similar to super-vs-ultra situations, which seems to be what ShaXan describes.

  8. Numsigmernen

    Oh, and I’d definitely be interested in knowing the nuances of that final scene.

    Well Maj, I’ve been testing against Zangief buffering his ultra in a neutral jump, so I know when exactly to do it, and after many tries, I got Akuma and Zangief to do their ultra startups at the same time. The camera angle was normal, like for a super, but Zangief grabbed Akuma out of it after the freeze was over. I also tested it with Zangief vs Zangief, both buffered into a neutral jump, and you were right, you can’t have two ultras occur at the same time. I personally think this is because of camera angles, and because Akuma’s startup freeze for his ultra has a super camera angle, only he can do it.

    ShaXan: Cool, thanks for taking the time to do the research. Akuma’s also the only character who can cancel normal moves into ultra, right? I guess in that sense it’s consistent. Anyway good to know. Might come in handy for something one of these days.
