CvS2 Nimuro’s Wrath (Abridged)

A couple of years ago i made a Capcom vs SNK 2 machinima called CvS2 Nimuro’s Wrath based on a samurai character from Legend of the Five Rings. As i later found out, the intersection of fighting game players and L5R players is somewhere between five and ten people on the entire planet. So the fighting game players can’t understand the L5R dialogue and the L5R players have no clue why the CvS2 segments are special. And to make matters worse, i had to make the scrubbiest mistake ever and put the entire CvS2 intro in the video.

Even though the end result was an incredibly, incredibly boring video, some of those choreographed matches turned out pretty well – especially the Haohmaru vs Rolento round. Well, i’ve finally gotten around to remaking a clean cut of the project containing only the fighting game segments (all save one).

As usual, there’s quite of bit of technical craziness everywhere and a full transcript would go on for pages, so i’m going to keep it simple this time. If anyone has any specific questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

This is a tool-assisted combo video recorded with two ASCII PAD V Pro programmable controllers and various emulator features. Absolutely no cheats, hacks, or game-altering devices were used in the making of. Some of the backgrounds look glitchy because of my dying Dreamcast, mentioned earlier.

I dug the bit vs Korihime (I never touched cvs2 so I dont know her actual name). That sequence looked dope.

Wish I could comment on some of the technical stuff but I never played the game.

  2. Bob Sagat

In the very first combo setup against Sagat, you cancel a kick, right before going into the super.
The kick doesn’t seem to connect, so I was curious to know why this was necessary. Was it just for show, or am I missing something here?

Cool vid btw. I was one of those guys who skipped over the storyline when you first released it, because I didn’t get it. I love the part where you kick Mai out of everything.

Kara-canceling far s.MK moves Haohmaru forward a lot, which allows me to start the combo further away from the corner. I could have made my life a lot easier by taking an extra step forward at the beginning, but this is the kind of stuff you end up doing (or having to do) when you use tool-assistance. Thanks for noticing it.

Damn, he really did! You can pause it at 1:04 and see the s.HK starting up. That’s absurd. The funny thing is, it looks like the range difference is only 3 pixels. There are only like four Guile players in the world who are good enough to get hit by that.

Thank you sir, i’m happy you enjoyed it. I learned a lot from making this video, and it’s always fun trying something new.

I went to GenCon SoCal by accident once. Happened to be in Anaheim the weekend they were holding it, saw posters outside the convention center, and went in to check it out. But they canceled it a couple of years ago, right? Anyway i was never good enough at L5R to compete in tournaments. I just liked the story and a bunch of the characters.

You can download the full version here.

Ive been to GenCon Indy for the past 3 years in a row. I always run Lion but i consistently scrub out day 2. This year im going to go for the SF4 tourney if they run it again this year. Nothing big (which is good bc i am terrible) but your footsies article is helping. Has it all clicked? Hell no, but in time i think your article will help my Zangief game (or Dudley by then) Thanks!

Don’t worry about picking up every little detail because some of those elements might not even apply to your individual play style. They’re just tools you can use when you run into a player who takes a specific approach.

The whole point of footsies is “everything has a counter.” Sometimes that counter is way more risky than what your opponent is doing, but that’s what tier lists are based on. Anyway once you have a complete arsenal, the game becomes more about reading your opponent or tricking them into misreading you. But it takes time to get that point so just take it step by step and try to learn something from every match.

    Good luck at Indy!

Luck is something i have the opposite of. I generally get gold screwed like its my job. What would be (in your opinion) the best guide or whatever for Zangief in the sf4 scene? Im having such a problem dealing with certain characters (when they are played with a modicum of decency) Sagats are a crap shoot for me and Akuma is always a war of attrition, but i know what they want in a battle. Its some of the less used (since Live is full of shotos anyway) like Blanka or Chun li

Practice is the best way to get better, but don’t overdo it because it’s kinda pointless if you’re not focused on pushing yourself and learning. So when you start noticing yourself zoning out, take a break or call it a day.

Try to find the best competition you can, obviously.

As far as character-specific resources, there are lots of good matchvids on u2b for any matchup you could possibly want. Watch a few of those and look for specific counters that they’re using. Also the SF4 Zangief Character Discussion subforum on SRK is pretty active and filled with some of the most analytical players on SRK. Go pick their brains about matchup gameplans.
