CvS2 Counter Attack Denial Guide

Game Version: Capcom vs SNK 2 / Dreamcast / Japan / 2001

Executing a Counter Attack does not immediately free your character from block stun, but it does seem to interrupt your opponent's action. This momentary pause gives your character time to go from blocking animation into the Counter Attack. Apparently, the pause does not occur if the opponent is initiating a super move. Since many lvl3 supers go into a hit frame immediately after superfreeze animation, attempting to Counter Attack a move as it is being canceled into a lvl3 super sometimes leads to the Counter Attack being totally negated during the preliminary block animation before the Guard Cancel takes place. Since super meter and Guard Bar costs are paid upfront, both are lost even if the Counter Attack is negated in this way. However, Counter Attack denial is a very rare occurence in actual gameplay because the Counter Attack must be performed immediately before superfreeze and because Counter Attacks in general are not very effective tools in CvS2. Counter Attack denial is more of an oversight than a glitch, but it leads to interesting unforeseen results.

CvS2 Counter Attack Denial screenshots

Mai's Super Deadly Ninja Bees
Mai cancels her close s.MK into an instant lvl3 super, interrupting Joe's Counter Attack attempt and forcing Joe to stay in block animation. Joe performs a second Counter Attack and trades hits with Mai. He follows through with an MK Tiger Kick, which has a juggle potential of one, giving Joe an extra juggle hit. Notice that Joe spent his entire super meter and sustained a great deal of Guard Bar damage to finally execute a Counter Attack.

Guile's Sonic Hurricane
Guile performs a lengthy pressure chain ending with his far s.HP canceled into an instant lvl3 super. Sagat's attempt to Counter Attack the s.HP is negated and his guard is crushed soon after. Had the Counter Attack gone off, Sagat would have taken all twelve hits of the Sonic Hurricane and his guard bar would not have been refilled. Thus, Counter Attack denial can favor the defender as well.

Cammy's Spin Drive Smasher
Cammy's relentless assault forces Geese to attempt a Counter Attack in desperation, but Cammy's lvl3 super interrupts the Counter Attack and keeps Geese blocking. The Counter Attack attempt costs Geese the remainder of his Guard Bar, and his guard is immediately crushed by Cammy's super, sustaining nearly the full damage of the lvl3 Spin Drive Smasher.
