CvS2 Evil Ryu Air Hurricane Kick Setups Guide
Game Version: Capcom vs SNK 2 / Dreamcast / Japan / 2001
Evil Ryu is the only Shoto in CvS2 with two air Hurricane Kick trajectories - arced (QCB + K) and hovering (HCB + K). This video demonstrates some advanced anti-blocking capabilities of Evil Ryu's hovering air Hurricane Kick. All combos were performed on a standard Dreamcast pad without any assistance, using the Training Mode Dummy feature whenever an opponent action was necessary.
Evil Thomas Osaki vs Buktooth setup
Evil Ryu follows a blocked j.D+MK divekick with a hovering air Hurricane Kick using the reverse AHVB forward motion (F, DF, D, DB, B, UF + K). Performing this motion results in a hovering air Hurricane Kick too low to the ground for opponents to duck under. In addition, Evil Ryu recovers far too soon for the opponent to retaliate. In this clip, Evil Ryu punishes Iori's attempted Reversal with his close s.HK buffered into the lvl3 Messatsu Gou Shoryu. Note that it is impossible to buffer into the air Hurricane Kick because it needs to be started with a jump and Evil Ryu has no attacks which can be jump-cancelled in CvS2. For this same reason, it cannot be roll-canceled.
Shin Alex Valle vs Sin setup
An air blocked hovering air Hurricane Kick creates a great advantage for Evil Ryu, who actually lands before his opponent. Shown here is a virtually inescapable Raging Demon setup against C-Groove Yamazaki. The only way out of this situation is to perform a Reversal Guillotine super. The c.LP linked into Evil Ryu's s.MP -> s.HP chain is just added because it looks cool. Evil Ryu's j.LP, j.LK, and vertical jumping MP and HK attacks can all be buffered into the air Hurricane Kick.
God John Choi vs Apoc setup
As in the previous clip, Evil Ryu makes his opponent block a vertical jumping HK canceled into the hovering air Hurricane Kick, landing before Balrog. He then performs a s.HP canceled into a juggling LK Hurricane Kick. Since ground hits cannot be air blocked in CvS2, Balrog has no way to escape the combo from this position. Evil Ryu continues juggling with his lvl2 Messatsu Gou Shoryu, which he cancels into a Taunt in order to reset the juggle count for the final HP Shoryuken.
OG Mike Watson vs Maj setup
This Guard Crush relies on the fact that air blocking causes about twice as much Guard Bar damage as ground blocking. Evil Ryu performs a j.MP attack against an airborne Guile on the way down from his jump, followed immediately by a vertical jumping HK canceled into a HK hovering air Hurricane Kick, immediately followed by another vertical jumping HK before Guile gets a chance to land. With his opponent unable to block, Evil Ryu links his c.MP into his c.HP and cancels into an HP blue fireball for a three hit combo. Guile immediately performs a Reversal Sonic Hurricane, but Evil Ryu has already recovered and is ready to block. In contrast, normal Ryu has no way of throwing a blue fireball that Guile cannot counter with a Sonic Hurricane. Note that meter-induced damage bonuses also modify Guard Bar damage by the same percentage. Using an EX-Groove to disable super meter rules out any such bonuses. Therefore, this Guard Crush will work in any groove.
